QUALITY CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

17 January 2019

Students at The Brades Lodge, the council’s centre for young people who experience social and mental health difficulties, are receiving top level advice when planning their careers.

Brades Lodge, based in Tividale, has been awarded the national ‘Quality in Careers Standards’ award to mark their work on apprenticeships, work experience,  college placements and general careers advice.

Executive head teacher  Neil Toplass said: “Our aim is to make the students who come through the school aspire to have a decent career and the skills to see them realise this aspiration.

“We have produced an outstanding careers support service that starts as soon as students arrive at The Brades Lodge so they can make a successful transition into post-16 education or an apprenticeship route.

“Students gain employability skills at a local coffee shop managed by the school, qualifications in First Aid and build their confidence in speaking to the public.”

“They get professional careers guidance from Connexions Sandwell adviser Debbie Jones, a careers psychometric assessment, visits to colleges and a comprehensive careers education programme”.

“Brades Lodge are setting the quality standard for their Careers programme. It is an incredible achievement and Connexions Sandwell were very honoured to have been chosen by Brades Lodge to provide them with essential Careers consultancy, so that Brades can be one of the best in the UK”, said Sybil McKenzie, Area Manager of Connexions Sandwell.

Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for children’s services, visited the Lodge to congratulate staff. He said: “This award is a very important confirmation that staff are working to make sure young people get the best possible advice on how they can get a worthwhile career after education.”
